Local environmental projects which are open for funding

Strategy for Nature Fund

The Project

The Strategy for Nature Fund was established in recognition that the Strategy for Nature is not simply a government document; it is a framework that requires support and action from the whole community to achieve its goals and objectives. The purpose of the Fund is to support environmental initiatives that further the goals and objectives of the Strategy for Nature by inviting invites individuals, organisations and students to apply for financial support each year.

Overview

The purpose of this Fund is to support environmental initiatives that further the goals and objectives of the Strategy for Nature by inviting invites individuals, organisations and students to apply for financial support each year.

Currently, a total of £40,000 is donated through the fund in the form of grants, with £9,000 of that dedicated specifically to a bursary for students completing graduate or post graduate degrees in a relevant subject with a commitment to carry out data collection for their research project in Guernsey and/ or Herm.

Any further contribution to this Fund, building on the currently available amount, will enable more support to be provided to projects and/ or students through the existing administration of the Strategy for Nature Fund.

Fourteen environmental projects were awarded funding in the 2024/2025 Strategy for Nature Funding round. Examples of these include:

  • restoration of dune grassland
  • enhancement of school grounds for nature
  • replacement barn owl boxes
  • support for La Société Guernesiaise Conservation Herd.

Four research projects were awarded funding in the 2024/2025 Strategy for Nature Funding round. These included the following projects:

  • comparing plant pollinator networks
  • researching conservation grazing.

Applications to the Strategy for Nature Fund are assessed by an approval panel. The panel is comprised of representatives from the Nature Commission and the States of Guernsey. They assess each application objectively and without bias, based on set application criteria.

Although this project already has an amount of £40,000 distributed to projects and as bursaries, there are more applications than currently available funding can support. This evidence's the communities desire to support Guernsey's natural environment, but requires the approval panel to make difficult decisions regarding which applications will receive funding and which won't.

If your organisation wishes to make a contribution to the Strategy for Nature Fund, any amount can be offered. However, the larger your contribution, the more support can be provided to projects and/ or students through the Strategy for Nature Fund.
