State of nature reporting

The Project

State of Nature reporting pulls together the evidence showing how wildlife and nature is fairing, to help everyone understand what is going on in nature, what is getting worse, and what needs protecting. State of Nature 2024 was released in October 2024, with the next report due to be released in 2029.

Overview

The second state of nature report for Guernsey and Herm is due to be released in 2029. The purpose is to make publicly available an analysis of data from biological monitoring and recording schemes to build on the State of Nature 2024 benchmark for the status of our wildlife.

State of Nature reporting assists all islanders, including businesses and government, in better understanding the importance of our natural environment, and the impacts of activities on our habitats and species.

‘State of Nature 2029’ will report on changes to our natural environment so that we may identify trends in the populations of our wildlife and galvanize action to prevent further loss and to encourage protection and enhancement.

Production of State of Nature 2029 will commence in 2027.

Production of State of Nature 2029 is estimated to cost approximately £35,000. This cost will include:

  • Data collation and analysis
  • Report writing and reviewing
  • Design and visualisations for the final outputs
  • Promotion and engagement on the final outputs following release.

The Nature Commission released the first state of nature report for Guernsey and Herm in October 2024.

As well as the full and summary reports produced, the Nature Commission coordinated a month of focussed activities to promote the report, and engage businesses, government and the community with it. Activities included a talk series, which were recorded, and the creation of 3 habitat videos. These are all available here: Guernsey Nature Commission - YouTube

This project helps to progress against the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:

  • #9 industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • #11 sustainable cities and communities
  • #12 responsible consumption and production
  • #13 climate action
  • #14 life below water

The Nature Commission is a Guernsey charity that works with business, government, the third sector, and the public to enhance the Island's natural environment and promote greater native biodiversity. In particular, the Nature Commission is working to reverse the decline in biodiversity by protecting and enhancing Guernsey's natural environment for the health of our economy and well-being of our island community.
