People and Nature Survey Launched
The Nature Commission is excited to announce the launch of the island’s first People and Nature Survey for Guernsey. Opening on Monday 6th October and running until Sunday 23rd November, this new survey invites islanders aged 16 and above to reflect on their experiences with nature and share their attitudes and values around nature.
The survey will help the Nature Commission to better understand how people interact with the natural environment – from coastal walks and sea swimming to wildlife watching and outdoor recreation. It aims to capture how nature contributes to physical and mental health, social connection and island culture.
The States of Guernsey’s 2020 Strategy for Nature has three goals with Goal A being ‘Connect our island community with nature’, the People and Nature Survey will gather information about the places islanders are visiting to connect with the natural world and the activities they are doing outdoors.
The survey covers three main areas:
Which places you visit and how often?
What activities you do outdoors?
How you feel about the natural environment in Guernsey?
The Nature Commission would like as many people as possible to take part:
“This is a chance for people in Guernsey to help the Nature Commission understand how nature fits into their lives. We’d also like to hear from people who don’t spend time outdoors so we can understand the reasons why. The results will help guide future decisions about how we care for our environment and support islanders’ wellbeing.”
Why It Matters:
🐦 Identify the outdoor places and activities that matter most to islanders
🌳 Explore the benefits of nature for wellbeing and mental health
📈 Influence the protection of natural spaces
🗣️ Give people the opportunity to share what matters most to them
How to Take Part:
The survey is now available via a link on the Nature Commission website and takes 10-15 minutes to complete. It is open to all Guernsey residents aged 16 and above. Responses are anonymous. https://gov.gg/peopleandnaturesurvey
If a paper copy of the survey is needed, they are available from the Nature Commission - telephone 01481 763271 or they can be printed from the Nature Commission website.
On completion of the survey, participants can be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win a REAL Guernsey Tour or a Herm Puffin Patrol kayak trip.
The closing date for the survey is Sunday 23rd November.
Results will be published in 2026 and will help build a clearer picture of how nature supports life on our island. The survey will be repeated in future years to build up a longer-term picture of how islanders connect with nature.
Together, let’s make nature part of everyday life.
