Fixed Asset Investment to Ensure Sustainability of the Conservation Herd

A reliable vehicle is essential for managing and moving La Société Guernesiaise’s Conservation Herd. It allows equipment to be moved to sites as well as allowing the animals to be transported safely in a livestock trailer. To maintain this vital capacity, significant investment is now needed. Funding for this is not generated in the current budgeting model and thus external charitable support would provide direct investment to ensure the sustainability of the project.

Overview

How to Support this Project

To support this project, please contact: conservationherd@societe.org.gg

The Conservation Herd is used as a land management tool on over a dozen sites across the island, including some of the most unique and species-rich grasslands, heathlands and marshland in Guernsey. As has been established for a number of decades and backed up by a wide range of scientific literature, having livestock graze the land in a natural and sympathetic way ensures that habitats are created for a wide variety of plants, invertebrates, mammals and birds. Without the Herd, this land would either be left without appropriate land management or mowed, which results in more uniformity and reduced biodiversity.

For more information visit Conservation Herd - La Societe Guernesiaise, or the Facebook page.

La Société Guernesiaise was founded in 1882 to encourage the study of the history, natural history, geography and geology of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the conservation of the Bailiwick’s natural environment and the preservation of its historic buildings and monuments. In many respects, La Société Guernesiaise is similar to the UK Wildlife Trusts. However, its activities extend into many other areas, including history, archaeology and astronomy.

Project Information

A suitable working vehicle is essential for the ongoing management of La Société Guernesiaise’s Conservation Herd.

It is used for carrying equipment and pulling the livestock trailer so the cows can access the different grazing areas across the whole island. Without a reliable vehicle, the project’s operations—and its impact—are at risk.

Funding would support the availability of a dependable vehicle to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the Conservation Herd project. As current resources do not cover this need, external charitable support would make a direct and meaningful contribution.

Funding needed

Funds generously contributed will be used to ensure the Conservation Herd team has access to a reliable vehicle capable of supporting its vital work. While the current Conservation Herd Land Rover has seen investment in recent years—such as a new chassis in 2019—significant further investment is now required to maintain vehicle capability.

Recent estimates from local suppliers indicate that the cost of ensuring a suitable and dependable vehicle for the Conservation Herd is approx. £20,000. Further details can be provided in discussion with the Conservation Herd Manager.

Which UN Sustainable Development Goals does this Project contribute to?

This project helps to progress against the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:

  • #12 responsible consumption and production
  • #13 climate action
  • #15 life on land

Outcomes

  • Animal welfare: the Conservation Herd can be kept healthy and safe
  • Project longevity: contributes towards ensuring the Conservation Herd continues to deliver value, remains relevant, and is supported long-term
  • Highly effective in managing land for biodiversity: supported by a body of evidence recognised by the UK Government, Natural England and the RSPB -  the Guernsey Conservation Herd has been active and highly successful since 2014 and now needs this support in order to continue its work
  • Positive media coverage: the story of a local business helping the Conservation Herd has strong media appeal
  • Content creation: great content for businesses sustainability reporting, as well as social media and newsletters
  • Carbon offset potential: indirectly contributes to carbon capture through grassland regeneration
  • Volunteer programs: future opportunities for staff of a local business to get involved hands-on with the Herd
  • Business branding on the Conservation Herd vehicle: opportunity for the supporting business to have their branding on the vehicle, as a mobile symbol of the company’s commitment to sustainability, environmental resilience, and heritage.
