La Société Guernesiaise was founded in 1882 to encourage the study of the history, natural history, geography and geology of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the conservation of the Bailiwick’s natural environment and the preservation of its historic buildings and monuments. In many respects, La Société Guernesiaise is similar to the UK Wildlife Trusts. However, its activities extend into many other areas, including history, archaeology and astronomy.

Guernsey Seasearch is a project under the Marine Biology Section of La Société.

Format and content

This opportunity is flexible: it can be either an in-office learning session, or a practical outdoor experience, or both!

If you choose one or the other, it can be condensed into a lunch hour, for ease of staff attendance. If you would like to opt for both formats, please allow extra time.

Whether in the office or out on the foreshore, this opportunity covers

  • health & safety
  • overview of the Seasearch and how it works in Guernsey
  • step-by-step demonstration of how to conduct the surveying
  • discussion regarding what happens with the data
  • general intertidal species identification
  • how to get involved outside of work

For those practical sessions in the great outdoors, suitable days and time will be limited by the tide - the lower the tide, the more there is to see! The outdoor location can be flexible depending on the location of your office/ where staff would like to spend the time.

For the outdoor practical experience, the maximum number of people for an individual opportunity is 20. Should you wish to up this number, there will be an additional cost, as it will be necessary for another Guernsey Seasearch Team member to come along. Staff will require appropriate footwear for the foreshore (i.e. wellies, or sturdy shoes they don't mind getting wet).

For the in-office learning, as many staff can attend as needed.

Cost

£200 for either a 1 hour office-based session, or a 1 hour outdoor practical session, led by a Guernsey Seasearch team member.

For the full office-base learning following by practical surveying on the foreshore, please contact Guernsey Seasearch to discuss cost based on time.
