The Nature Commission, launched earlier this year, is an independent charitable organisation. It aims to enhance Guernsey’s natural environment within a generation by ensuring that nature matters to islanders of all ages. It spearheads change through collaboration and education.

The Commission has two newly appointed members of staff in Angela Salmon, Head of Operations and Education (part-time), and Charlotte Burgoine, Ecologist (full-time).

The creation of this team, which will be expanded in time, marks exciting progress towards achieving the ambitions for the Nature Commission’s first year and beyond.

As Head of Operations and Education, Miss Salmon’s role will be wide-ranging, in promotion of nature awareness, education and engagement initiatives across the island’s schools, public events and an integrated communications plan.

The natural world is amazing and living on a small island surrounded by the sea makes it easy to enjoy nature. When people connect with nature they value its importance, today and for future generations.’

Working collaboratively with Miss Salmon, and partners across the natural environment community, Miss Burgoine will be bringing her invaluable expertise to help develop and analyse a strategic programme of Citizen Science, undertake necessary data collation and targeted reporting, in order to establish a baseline for Guernsey’s Natural Capital.

The Commission is a key contributor to the implementation of the Strategy for Nature. In this context, it plays a critical role in ensuring that Guernsey’s biodiversity is both protected and enhanced, and that it is valued in government policymaking and economic planning.

About Angela Salmon

Joining the Nature Commission in a part-time role as the Head of Operations and Education, Angela has maintained a strong passion for the natural environment throughout her life. As a primary school teacher, Angela worked voluntarily on the island for nearly twenty years as part of the Guernsey Conservation Volunteers (GCV) and more recently in a paid part-time role for GCV. 

About Charlotte Burgoine

Charlotte is a recently qualified ecologist, who brings with her a broad range of experience in practical and theoretical conservation, as well as a love for island life and its biodiversity. Charlotte was the first recipient of the La Société Guernesiaise Bursary in 2020, for her on-island research of management intensity on the biodiversity of hedgerows.
